3D PRINTED METALS (LENS Systems)

Additive Manufacturing (AM), commonly known as 3D printing, has many advantages over the more conventional subtractive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing is a building up process where a part or features are added layer by layer following the geometry from a computer aided 3D design model, in contrast to the subtractive manufacturing where the object is created by cutting away the excess from solid materials to form the finished part. Therefore, the 3D printing technology has provided the advantages in term of design flexibility, better end-product performance, faster processing time to market, lower manufacturing cost, and reduced material waste.

Optomec Inc., a company with more than 20 years of experience in DED processing, offers a full range of Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) additive manufacturing solutions for creating, enhancing and repairing metal components. LENS systems use directed energy deposition (DED) technique where high-powered lasers ((400W to 3kW) build structures layer by layer by fusing powdered metals, alloys, ceramics or composites into fully-dense parts with excellent mechanical properties. The LENS 3D printers use the geometric information from a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) solid model which automatically drive the LENS process as it builds up a component layer by layer.

The LENS 3D printing machine not only allows the customers to print full 3D parts, but it is also possible to add materials onto existing 3D parts / objects that were produced using conventional manufacturing methods, such as CNC machining, injection molding, etc. Optomec 3D printing systems had been used to produce innovative and high quality products for the markets of energy, aerospace, automotive, electronic, life sciences, defence and the Internet of Things (IoT)
